Zaterdagavond zijn we sinds tijden weer eens naar een optreden van de Jan Akkerman Band geweest. Het vond plaats in het Pim Jacobs Theater in Maarssen.
We zochten een plaats op de één na achterste rij, naast de apparatuur voor het geluid en het licht, waar Jans vaste geluidstechnicus Neil Denholm druk bezig was. Van hem mocht ik mijn camera op één van de consoles zetten, waardoor ik zonder flits kon fotograferen.

De band bestond, behalve Jan op gitaar, verder uit drummer Marijn van den Berg, keyboardspeler Coen Molenaar en bassist Serge Bredewolde (die Wilbrand Meischke verving). Toen ik Jan zag opkomen met zijn ‘Black Beauty’, de zwarte Gibson Les Paul Custom gitaar uit zijn Focus-tijd, dacht ik: ‘dit wordt vast weer een gedenkwaardige avond.’

De band begon inderdaad met vier stukken van Focus: ‘Answers, Questions, Questions, Answers’, ‘Focus II’, ‘Anonymus’ en een geheel nieuwe en schitterende uitvoering van de eerste Focus-hit: ‘House of the king’ (die op de cd ‘Live in concert 2007’ staat). Je zag het publiek enorm genieten. Ikzelf had kippenvel bij Focus II en had de 1e twee nummers niet meer live gehoord sinds Jan in Focus zat.
Daarna volgde het nummer: ‘Tranquilizer’ (van het standaardalbum ‘Eli’ dat Jan opnam samen met zanger Kaz Lux, met wie hij in Brainbox heeft gezeten) en het laatste nummer voor de pauze was de Maarssen 2008-versie van: ‘Bluesroute’.

Na een pauze van ongeveer een kwartier kwam Jan alleen terug op de bühne met een akoestische gitaar (die op een Maccaferri-gitaar lijkt) en begon met een korte suite van nummers, waarvan ik alleen ‘Les feuilles mortes’ (van Jacques Brel) herkende, daarna kwamen de andere bandleden er ook weer bij en speelden ze Jans compositie ‘Cotton Bay’. De band vervolgde met een moderne uitvoering (compleet met dance-loop) van het gypsy-achtige nummer ‘The zebra’, dat Jan ook o.a. in zijn theatertour van enkele jaren geleden met het Rosenberg Trio speelde.
Hierna nam Jan zijn ‘Black Beauty’ weer ter hand en volgde er een prima uitvoering van het wonderschone ‘You do something to me’ van Paul Weller, dat Jan de laatste tijd regelmatig ten gehore brengt. Als laatste werd er een lange versie van het nummer ‘Urban string’ van de dance-achtige cd ‘CU’ gespeeld, waarin er ruimte was voor schitterende solo’s van de overige bandleden, net name die van topdrummer Marijn en toetsenist Coen, die steeds vingervlugger lijkt te worden.

Na een geweldig applaus volgden er nog 2 toegiften uit Jans Focus-periode: de klassiekers ‘Hocus Pocus’ en ‘Sylvia’. Hierbij ging het dak er helemaal af, en kreeg het publiek een grandioos besluit van een geweldige muzikale avond!

Na afloop zijn we Jan en zijn bandleden nog even backstage gaan begroeten. Het was weer ouderwets gezellig. Er waren ook een Ierse en een Schotse fan bij aanwezig. Het is altijd leuk om buitenlandse fans van Jan Te ontmoeten. Hieraan merk je altijd dat Jan een internationaal erkende topgitarist is en we er trots op mogen zijn dat hij uit ons eigen Nederland komt. Om met Jan’s eigen woorden te spreken: ‘Thank you very Dutch.’

On Saturday night we went to a concert of the Jan Akkerman Band. It took place in the Pim Jacobs Theatre in Maarssen, Holland. It has been a while, since we saw the band play live.
We found some seats in the back of the venue, near the sound and light equipment, where Jan’s very own sound engineer Neil Denholm was doing his job. I got his permission to put my camera on one of the consoles, so that I didn’t have to use flashlight.

In addition to Jan on the guitar, the band consisted of drummer Marijn van den Berg, keyboard player Coen Molenaar and bass player Serge Bredewolde (who replaced Wilbrand Meischke). When I saw Jan entering the stage with his ‘Black Beauty’, the black Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar from his Focus-days, I thought to myself: ‘this will surely be a night to remember.’

And indeed, the band started with four Focus-pieces: ‘Answers, Questions, Questions, Answers’, ‘Focus II’, ‘Anonymus’ and a completely new and magnificent version of the first Focus-hit: ‘House of the king’ (that’s on the cd ‘Live in concert 2007’). One could notice how the audience enjoyed itself. I had the goose bumps during tonight’s version of ‘Focus II’ and hadn’t heard Jan play the first to pieces live since Jan’s Focus-days. The next song was ‘Tranquilizer’ (from the album ‘Eli’ that Jan recorded with singer Kaz Lux, with whom he was in the band Brainbox). The last played piece before the break was the Maarssen 2008 version of ‘Bluesroute’.

After the quarter-of-an-hour break Jan returned to the stage alone with an acoustic guitar (that looked like a Maccaferri-guitar) and started with a short suite (I only recognized the song ‘Les feuilles mortes’ of Jacques Brel). Afterwards the other band members joined Jan on stage again and together they played his composition ‘Cotton Bay’.
The band continued with a modern version (including a dance loop) of ‘The zebra’, the song that Jan i.e. played in his theatre tour of some years ago with the gypsy Rosenberg Trio.
Then Jan grabbed his ‘Black Beauty’ again and played a superb version of Paul Weller’s ‘You do something to me’, the song he regularly puts on his set list lately. The last performed song was an extended version of ‘Urban string’ from the dance cd ‘CU’. During this piece of music there were possibilities for the other band members to demonstrate their musical skills: superb drumming of Marijn and Coen seems to become quicker on the keys under Jan’s influence.

After an enthusiastic applause two encores were played: the Focus-classics: ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Sylvia’. The audience went completely wild and got a marvelous ending of a great musical evening!

Afterwards we went to say hello to Jan and the other members of his band. It was great as ever. There were also an Irish and a Scottish fan present. It is always nice meeting foreign fans of Jan’s. From this fact one notices that Jan is an internationally recognized top guitarist and that we Dutchies can be really proud of the fact that he is from our country. ‘Thank you very Dutch’, so to speak.
